The ‘Espace découverte en pays du cognac’ is a modern interpretation centre that invites visitors to discover more about cognac country.
The centre is on the site of the very oldest cognac company, the Maison Augier, which was founded in 1643. It is an excellent starting point for visiting the region and the town of Cognac itself – the birthplace of King François 1er and Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of Europe.
The ‘Espace découverte’ project was initiated by the ‘Communauté de Communes de Cognac’ and the building was restored by the architectural consulting firm Karen Millet. The centre was opened to the public in June 2004, since when it has enabled the many visitors to find out more about the rich natural and architectural heritage of the region via a multi-sensory experience that includes 3-D models, interactive screens and scenographic displays designed by the Itinérance agency.
On the ground floor, visitors can see a 3-D illuminated model of the region which highlights historical points of interest, walks along the River Charente, Romanesque churches and museums. A great way to plan an itinerary or a leisurely day out and about in cognac country.
Along the river is the ‘Espace découverte’s multi-sensory scenographic show. The evocative 10-minute viewing in a purpose-built theatre reveals through images, 3-D objects, light and sound the history of the River Charente, the work of the rivermen and the rapid commercial expansion begun centuries ago by Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Also on the ground floor, the views from the skies visual display offers an artistic view of the region from the skies. In the 6-minute showing, the River Charente is the main theme linking huge landscape images of the region which are presented in the form of a large open book.
On the first floor, an information space carries a display of books and brochures on different aspects of the Cognac region that can be browsed at leisure. The space also features two interactive screens that show routes and itineraries around the region to see the natural and architectural heritage at first hand.
On the same floor, there are 6 magical books; audio-visual displays that each tell a different story illustrated by a 3-D image, whether Romanesque cupola, Charentais stone archways, a salamander, a grey heron or a dragonfly.
Finally, on this floor there is a boutique which has a range of gift ideas and souvenirs, including local produce, artwork, books and decorative items on the themes of Romanesque art, nature and the history of the region.
Around 35 kms from Angoulême, 12 kms from Jarnac (the birthplace of François Mitterand) and not far from the Atlantic coast, The ‘Espace découverte en pays du cognac’ is situated the heart of the historic quarter of the town of Cognac, near the River Charente, and offers a different kind of visit experience that appeals to all, young and old alike.
There is no entrance fee and you are welcome to walk around the centre at your leisure – a visit lasts around 45 minutes.
