About the King
Travel in time to the heart of Francis I’s history, born in Cognac on 12th September 1494 and crowned King of France in 1515! Come and meet this emblematic figure of Cognac, his birthplace!
About the rivermen
The river Charente flourished as early as the 10th century thanks to a successful trade in salt, a precious commodity travelling on the river on ‘gabare’ boats (flat bottomed trading boats commonly used on the river). You will find out how these light boats had nothing in common with the later versions of the 17th century and you will meet these true local rivermen.
The team at the Espace découverte will help you travel through time thanks to its knowledge of local architecture and heritage.
About the Augier family
The Espace Découverte en pays de cognac will tell you the story of the Augier family who founded the famous eponymous cognac company in 1643. At that time, the family settled its trading house on the very spot where the Espace découverte now stands.
